I'm not going to question the reasoning or appearance of several new Niche Anime boards over the past few weeks

I want to know; what prerequisites are needed to start an idea of my own

1. An idea.
2. A webhost and a working install of wakaba.
3. ???
4. PROFIT!

I have the idea and Wakaba part already; what's recommended for a host

I don't suppose my shared hosting account would last long for a project like this

Most of the boards are on shared hosts. How much bandwidth per month does your account provide?

Additionally, do they provide shell access and perl?

I'd hazard a guess that most niche boards do not use more than 50GB a month. You're probably safe with one board, unless you strike lucky.

I'm of the opinion that series-specific boards are best avoided. Unless there's an enduring universe underlying it (see: Type-Moon or Gundam), the longevity is probably limited.

Galaxy Angel is a long running series. But there's already a dedicated board out there (though not on iichan) and the dedicated posters on iichan have dumped all their good stuff in the moe and cw boards. By now they're resorting to screencaps from GA games. There's clearly a demand for GA art but the well seems to be running dry.

Dmpk2k is debating the following for PE (we are /elf/)

1. Increase the individual filesize limit on /elf/, or
2. Create a board dedicated to archives. Both (1 and 2 ) have issues though.

Cognac250: What sort of issues are there?

Dmpk2k: Allowing large files posted on a board causes large fluctuations in the board content. A single thread with a number of zips can empty a board of all image content.
( Remember, we have had no problems from posting zips. We’ve posted zips with out damaging our image content. In fact we have been models of proper manners regarding the economic use of zips.) On the other hand, if you increase the board size limit, and nobody posts archives, there will be too many images. It's one of the drawbacks of a size-limited board (as opposed to post-limited).

As for /file/, (see >> 3395 in http://www.wakachan.org/elf/res/3983.html#i3995 per Wolf’s comment) it's been tried before. It's potentially dangerous board because:

1. admins need to check, ie open every file.
2. Some one almost always posts things unrelated to board. (Most likely a random or new visitor to PE..)
3. For few posts and visits, such a board consumes an inordinate amount of bandwidth.

(What he means here is a board dedicated to just files, in our case this means zip or winrar. They’ve done this before and some posters were abusive.)

SO: ALL THIS MEANS: WE have basically 2 choices as dmpk2k will decide one or the other.
1should we choose the ability to upload larger file sizes.

2. should we have an archive capability for PE?
Remember: we already have the ability to upload Zips- this is a blessing and we don’t want to loose it.

-or-3... are we just fine with our new capacity upgrade and don't want to bother with any new changes for now?

I should add: These are anonymous image boards. We don't care much for "proactive, long term posters". We don't need or want people to be "concerned with representing their favorite board’s questions". The board can represent itself just fine. It's shit like that that is making me consider suggesting shutting down the whole board, as you have managed to make it degenerate into pathetic little circle jerk.

I thank you for clearing it up in precise terms. i had gone away for a time then came back using "Action bastard" and "proxy cat" before settling back down to cognac250 where I will remain. yes, i acknowledge my mistake. Being in a state of mind as i was at the time is no excuse. I can clearly tell you are angry, and believe me when I say I am sorry for the trouble if that is worth any thing in my present state of credibility in your eyes. now, I am on my way to apologize to dmpk2k for any inconveniences this may have caused him. yes, this is true. for a long time i was not the model of good behavior and have swayed back and forth in such manner. simply put, you will find perhaps many marks on my record. this not the voice of excuse, but of open fact. i speak to dmpk2k not to condone- yes i am a bit upset too, so understand some venting may occur- but out of respect. i have iterated my past mistakes to others in command on various occasions. in those exchanges, i gained more insight into how a board works behind the scene as well. my posting behavior has toned down however inconsistently. as you say, i need to control that inconsistency. I spoke of this very issue to dmpk2k recently and he had many wise things to say. I speak so plainly because I am in earnest to be completely honest. I have been here a long time so on some points my memory may not be as precise as your logs. Again, despite how upset you are and I do want to covey any disrespect given my candid tone.
