"Germany's highest court on Tuesday overturned a law that let anti-terror authorities retain data on telephone calls and e-mails, saying it posed a "grave intrusion" to personal privacy rights and must be revised.

The court ruling was the latest to sharply criticize a major initiative by Chancellor Angela Merkel's government and one of the strongest steps yet defending citizen rights from post-Sept. 11 terror-fighting measures."

I'm surprised that something like that was even passed in modern Germany.

WASHINGTON — As President Obama begins making final decisions on a broad new nuclear strategy for the United States, senior aides say he will permanently reduce America’s arsenal by thousands of weapons. But the administration has rejected proposals that the United States declare it would never be the first to use nuclear weapons, aides said.

Warmongering Polit-tard rejects suggestion to do the right thing in the future, considering that the wrong thing was already done in the past. Yeah, we will do first strike if it damn well pleases us.

At least they are honest.

"Dirty air in California costs the state more than $190 million in health care costs to treat people for ailments such as asthma and pneumonia, according to a RAND Corporation study.

The study found that from 2005 to 2007, pollution from particulate matter and ozone caused about 30,000 emergency room visits and hospital admissions. The public paid for most of these costs, according to the study, with Medicare and Medi-Cal picking up most of the tab in many cases.

The majority of the health problems cited in the report happened in the state's San Joaquin Valley and were caused by particulate matter, or tiny pieces of soot."

"Microsoft warned of a new hole on Monday that could be exploited by attackers to take control of older Windows systems running Internet Explorer and for which proof-of-concept exploit code has been released publicly.

The vulnerability affects Windows 2000-, XP- and Server 2003-based systems. It exists in the way that Visual Basic Scripting, or VBScript, interacts with Windows Help files, Microsoft said in its security advisory. VBScript is an Active Scripting language for executing functions embedded in Web pages.

In an attack scenario, victims would somehow be lured to visit a malicious Web site that displays a specially crafted dialog box, Microsoft said. The box could prompt visitors to press the F1 key, which would install malware on the visitor's computer when pressed."

"Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows Server 2008 are not affected. The issue is mitigated on Windows Server 2003, where IE Enhanced Security Configuration is enabled by default."

"Botnets cause surge in February spam

Spam now accounts for close to 90 percent of all e-mail worldwide due to a surge in February, according to Symantec.

Two botnets named Grum and Rustock helped push spam levels up 5.5 percent in February over the prior month, according to the security firm's report (PDF). After doing business as usual over the past year, Grum suddenly sprang to life in February, increasing the amount of spam it generated by 51 percent. As a result, the botnet is now to blame for 26 percent of all global spam.

Rustock also surged last month, pushing up global spam levels by 25 percent on February 17 to the highest level for the entire month. The rise of both botnets were traced to activity related to Canadian pharmaceutical spam, Symantec said. One of the hottest scams on the Internet, pharmaceutical spam now is responsible for 65 percent of all worldwide spam."

"The European Commission has cleared the way for a genetically modified potato to be grown in the EU - only the second GM product it has allowed.

The starch of the Amflora potato can be utilised for industrial uses like making paper, and for animal feed - but not for human consumption.

Environmental groups have strongly opposed the introduction of GM crops.

But the Commission insisted its decision was based on "a considerable volume of sound science"."

The US space agency's (Nasa) Mini-Sar experiment found more than 40 small craters containing water-ice.

But other compounds - such as hydrocarbons - are mixed up in lunar ice, according to new results from another Moon mission called LCROSS."

"A tsunami advisory has been canceled in the last U.S. area that had been under any sort of alert following the Chilean earthquake.

The Alaska Tsunami Warning Center canceled the advisory early Sunday morning for the far reaches of the Aleutian Islands, stretching from Sand Point to Attu in the west.

Much earlier Saturday, a tsunami warning for Hawaii was canceled after just small waves hit the islands.

U.S. coastal areas stretching from the southern California to Alaska's Aleutians along with Canada's British Columbia were under an advisory — the lowest level alert. That advisory was lifted in segments throughout the day.

No injuries or significant property damage were reported in mainland coastal areas, where waves packed little punch and often amounted to no more than surges or rough surf."
