"An Atlas 5 rocket carrying a national security communications satellite is in orbit after an early morning launch.

The rocket launched at 7:07 a.m. Saturday from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. It took into space the first of a series of new satellites that will be used for advanced military data.

The Advanced Extremely High Frequency satellite, made by Lockheed Martin, has 10 times more capacity and moves data six times more efficiently than the five Milstar II communications satellites currently in use. The higher data rates can send video, battlefield maps, targeting data and other communications in real time."

"Solar physicists may have discovered why the Sun recently experienced a prolonged period of weak activity.

The most recent so-called "solar minimum" occurred in December 2008.

Its drawn-out nature extended the total length of the last solar cycle - the repeating cycle of the Sun's activity - to 12.6 years, making it the longest in almost 200 years.

During a solar minimum the Sun is less active, producing fewer sunspots and flares.

The new research suggests that the longer-than-expected period of weak activity may have been linked to changes in the way a hot soup of charged particles called plasma circulated in the Sun."

"The Pakistani army has moved closer to buying Predator XP drones from General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc., after the company said it has received export approval.

But U.S. Undersecretary for Defense Michele Flournoy said on a trip to India this week that only unarmed drones will be sold to Pakistan.

The missile-armed Predator can loiter over a target for long periods and attack by remote control, a capability that concerns India, which has had periodic border confrontations with Pakistan over the disputed mountainous Kashmir region.

Flournoy confirmed an announcement last month by General Atomics Aeronautical Systems that short-range drones for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance operations would be supplied to Pakistan.

"We have put only two unarmed tactical UAVs, Scan Eagle and Shadow, on the table. They are not armed drones,'' she said."

"The US Senate has reconvened during its August recess to pass a $600m (£385m) Mexico border security measure.

The funds will mostly be directed to activities on the south-west border, such as hiring 1,000 border patrol agents and 250 immigration and customs enforcement agents.

It will also provide for new surveillance technology including unmanned drones."

"By putting their home computers to work when they would otherwise be idle, three "citizen scientists" have discovered a rare astronomical object.

The unusual find is called a "disrupted binary pulsar"; these pulsars can be created when a massive star collapses.

The discoverers, from the US and Germany found the object with the help of the Einstein@Home project."

"A Swedish motorist caught driving at 290km/h (180mph) in Switzerland could be given a world-record speeding fine of SFr1.08m ($1m; £656,000), prosecutors say.

The 37-year-old, who has not been named, was clocked driving his Mercedes sports car at 170km/h over the limit.

Under Swiss law, the level of fine is determined by the wealth of the driver and the speed recorded.

In January, a Swiss driver was fined $290,000 - the current world record.

Local police spokesman Benoit Dumas said of the latest case that "nothing can justify a speed of 290km/h".

"It is not controllable. It must have taken 500m to stop," he said."

"Former Mexican president Vicente Fox has called for the legalisation of drugs, arguing that prohibition has failed to curb rising drug-related violence and corruption.

Mr Fox said legalisation did not mean that drugs were good.

But he said it was a strategy that could reduce the power of the cartels."

I'm afraid it's the only way you can stop the violence. They tried everything else, drug legalization is the only way.

If dickhead addicts want to kill themselves by pumping themselves full of that crap, fine. Less dumb twats in the world. And the government's coffers are filled by the taxes levied on legalised (and thus controlled) drugs. Everyone wins (except the junkies & drug cartels).

As I always say, the best way to stop taking drugs, is not to start in the first place

>> No.5496

The problem is not whether they can legally get drugs or not. The problem is that we had enough with the problems caused by stupid alcoholic twats and now we will have to deal with problems caused by the even more stupid drug addict twats.

As I'm allergic to alcohol, I wouldn't know about that. Nor have I ever taken anything not prescribed by my physician (and even then, they've never had any hallucinogenic effects.

I've never smoked in my life, neither.

Like I say, the best way to stop taking drugs/smoking/becoming an alcoholic is not to start in the first place

Be drug/nicotine/booze-free. It won't kill you. I'm proof it doesn't.

"Star-gazers are being urged to stay up late and enjoy one of the best displays of the Perseid meteor showers for some years on the night of 12 August 2010.

This is because they coincide with a moon-free night, so the skies are darker than usual.

Dr Carolyn Crawford from the Institute of Astronomy in Cambridge advised the use of one bit of specialist equipment.

"A reclining chair. You'll get a crick in the back of the neck if you're looking up for long," she pointed out."
