Seconding this. The fourth novel was easily my favourite, and the movie is a good enough rendition to be well worth watching if you already know the story.

I saw the film first, but it didn't detract from the novel at all for me. The film is far more powerful, I'd recommend seeing it first to feel its full force.

Haruhi anime started in 2006. It could'nt be 5 years. I remembered someone stated he/she(?) was hestitate to start Haruhi board. When the show was popular, it attracted a lot of trolls. The show is not as popular now. The DVD sale in Japan suffered due to the loop incident, though it still makes more than some other anime.

Best version to my knowledge is still the camrip subbed by Mazui. The raw was EXTREMELY eye-cancerous, but they managed to fix it so it's only moderately eye-cancerous, and much more viewable now.
