What the hell are you talking about? First there's the basic story about the Shadow Lord. Not really complex, but it's there. After you defeat him, the story converges into three paths depending on your chosen home nation. Then there's FOUR expansions which all have their own areas and storylines, which are all told through lengthy cutscenes and have a lot of recurring characters. It's actually possible to "beat" FFXI by playing through all of these stories. The order you play them in doesn't matter, although Rise of the Zilart can only be played after beating the initial main story, as it is pretty much the direct sequel to it. Not to mention all those little subplots told through minor questlines.

Pic related, it's the various main characters and villains of all the storylines.
