Since FFXII is also set in Ivalice, is the Ultima you encounter there, as seen in

the same as the Altima of FFT? Or is XII's Ivalice a different one altogether? I have awful trouble keeping track, but I seem to recall it as being the same world, just a different area of it.

I'm not sure if it's the same Ivalice, since in FFT it's just one kingdom while in FF12 it's the name of the whole world.

FFT takes place loooooooooong after FF12.

St. Ajora's "flood" took place years after FFX12. That wiped out the civilization seen in FF12, and Tactics Advance and A2.

As for Ultima's connection to the Ultima esper seen in the other Ivalice games... it's never really elaborated on. Nor is it for the other Lucavi who also have espers.

Here's the official timeline, I can't read it, but you can see where the games are labeled. Vagrant Story's not on it, I think... but that takes place after FFT.
