If there are any doubts that FF8 was one of the worst things to happen to the final fantasy fandom...

Are you fuckin retarded? If there is alot of fans of anything, there is bound to be a group of them that take it too far and become a fandom-shit. FFVII has it and so does FFVIII. Nothing new.

I honestly don't understand what people have against FFVIII. I loved the game.

>> No.5598

Don't hate the game, hate the player/s. FFXIII just happens to have one of the most retarded fanbases since we have an emo for a lead character (not really a bad thing, but fans usual tend to follow by his example).

>>5597 Well, its because it make progress in everyway from the other titles. However, its also what made it easier.

FFI-Well, now do don't have to buy weapons.
FFII-You don't have to beat up a buddy to raise stats.
FFIII-This time orphan kids have personalities.
FFIV- Picking what abilities you want to grind.
FFV- Being able to add supporting abilities.
FFVI- Desperation attacks are more frequent
FFVII- Sooner and easier to junction magic to your weapon or self.

Not only that, but FFVIII is a troll game. Everyother RPG had you grind lvls to be stronger. FFVIII had you grind lvls to get your ass beat harder. It made you play smarter instead of grinding in one area. However, if you were too smart, you made shit too easy.

I for one love the game. When it gets too easy, I unjunction magic from stats, and use it. If it gets hard, well, I obviously junction magic. If I don't want to card battle for magic, I turn monsters into cards and cardmod, and vise versa.

And lastly, Squall isn't emo. He's in the military. Feelings are put aside in battle. You can't go running back for a friend and screw up your whole platoon. He wasn't sad, he was slightly unhappy, until he kills. He especially showed his resentment about making friends when he had to turn in Ellone to White Seed. He doesn't want to dream about having friends, he's not in the position to have them in the first place.

And yet the theme of the game is something along the lines of, "love that transcends time." Squall fell in love with Rinoa and he obviously wanted that to happen. Huh, imagine that...

Well, after almost dying the first time, he figured he'd have a better hold of the situation. When Rinoa went into a coma, even with him there, he said fuck it. He couldn't wait til the end to tell her he loves her, she had to know now!

And either way, I wrote that to put into context that he's not an emo faggot (as alot of people like to say). He's well thought and prepared.

I do believe people's resentment is less about him being a cold military man and more about crap like the whole "I won't be referred to with past tenses" outburst.

Deep down, Squall actually respects Seifer and sees him as much as a reflection of himself. So when they spoke about Seifer in past tense, it was like they were doing the same to Squall. It would be like Seifer was in that room and heard people talking that way about him. And you know Seifer would have outbursted.

Hey Squall,

Don't worry about what these fools say. I understand you, I finally understood why Cosmos put me with you. We are alike you and I. I lost my parents, you lost yours. And there is something different between us, I'm still sad about my parents death, but atleast I still remember them. I carry them with me where ever I go, but you can't. You can't take your parents with you, you can't even take sis with you. You're alone. You feel like you some how been raped of something truely special. It stayed with you like a ghost because you didn't recognize what was taken. However, when you outbursted, you finally caught on secretly what has happened. When you saw the past, you realized something was forgotten. You don't want to be a memory, right Squall? You might dissappear like your parents and your sis? Just like you couldn't get them back, physically, mentally, you think no one will be there to catch you.

I'm so sorry Squall, I promise, I will catch you. You don't have to cling on that hope that will crush you that you hope and theres no one there. You don't have to hope, I'll just be there...waiting...

Well, uh, if Seifer went into outburst due to his low self-esteem or whatever, that's just pathetic of him.

That makes Squall's outburst even more pathetic, and so painfully bratty in its tactlessness and selfishness.

I had to quit playing because I can't stand a character who speaks primarily in ellipses, is socially retarded, and is pushed forward as the lead when even FF8's lackluster supporting cast held more appeal.

The only thing I'm grateful for that came out of FF8 is Edea and Quistis porn.

Oh, and Laguna was superior.

Give me a break. This would have merits if only the other FF heroes don't actually have flaws.

Squall's problem is something he is no longer entitled to show its effects around so actively.

Squall: "Whatever."
Zell: "What the hell wrong's with him?"
Quistis: "Give him a break. His parents just died yesterday."

Is a lot better than

Squall: "Whatever."
Zell: "What the hell's wrong with him?"
Quistis: "Give him a break. His family left him so many years ago."
Zell: "So that's why... wait, what? All of our family left us so many years ago! What the hell's wrong with him?"

This. Squall only redeemed himself when he fell in love and when he and his party found out that they were all from the same orphanage, which immediately takes away his license to be an emo bastard (since the rest of them would probably slap him senseless if he ever whines about being all alone).

>> No.5653

>>5648
In the case of Zell, Quistis, Selphie and Irvine, they had atleast adoptive parents so that they can ignore the fact thier orphans. Seifer didn't really care much for Ellone (or anyone), he just wanted attention, mostly from Edea, Squall secondly. This is why Seifer has no troubles making friends because he didn't really give a shit about the ones he had, simply an attention whore. Squall didn't have adoptive parents after Edea, Squall lost his Sis and his friends, minus Irvine and Seifer. Squall, as a child, put himself in the position that he was going to save Ellone and he was going to do it all by himself. When he finally got to Garden, he accepted the use of GFs, which made him forget why he was fighting alone and why he had such strive. He forgot why he felt so abandon. However, thanks to you guys, now I'm beginning to believe it had more to do with him doing it on his own. A little mix of both?

Its not even close to your fault. And as the person defending Squall/FFVIII, I pretty much bring it opon myself. I can Squall-it and say Whatever and move along, but there is not one place that likes FFVIII. And in many cases, I see people hating it over misplaced memories or they didn't understand how to play the game. Mind you, I can agree if you don't like FFVIII, not everyone will, especially if you thought it was easy. FFVIII had to be one of the easiest games to beat. Mostly everything else seems to be people either not knowing or not remembering and all around "cool to hate" FFVIII.

>> No.5657

>>5656

I don't hate FFVIII as a whole, mind. I don't even really hate Squall since he's actually quite alright by the end of the game.

I simply have problems with the handwaving that Squall's jerkness comes from him being a well-thought and prepared military man. Because, ehm, it's not?

His thought processes and actions thereof are actually an overreaction for something, while sad, is just the common reality of life.

One can be a loner without doing "..." all the time. One can push people away without resorting to "whatever". And surely one can keep himself from doing an inappropriate outburst after another person's death, no matter how uncomfortable the situation is? He blows his own problems out of proportion that I had to keep chanting "He's 17, 17, 17. We do that when we're 17" to tolerate it.

Maybe that's actually the point? Maybe that's what makes his character intersting? Heck, maybe it's realistic that way? Nevertheless, it's not something I can enjoy

>> No.5660

>>5657
From what I hear, he said more than just "..." and "whatever" in the Japanese release. I guess I never let those things even entered my mind. And I think he does a whole lot of talking in his head than we are allowed to know. I remember the part where He and Rinoa are about to dance in Fisherman Horizon, he was so busy talking in his head, he tuned out Rinoa, pissed her off, and realized it. That said, everytime he does "...", he's too busy thinking in his head. He did alot of "..." in the car to Balamb Town and you find out he was thinking of Ellone, or more notably at the time, the girl in the infirmary.

And to add, someone said this in another chan:

Squall outbursted because he realized he might die soon without anyone getting to know him. Everything they will say about Squall:
"He was such a lone-wolf"
"Always so cold-hearted!"
"He even told me to go talk to a wall!"
Worse than what Seifer was getting in the room.

Right off the bat, he actually tries to be nice to Rinoa, talking about her feelings, "I saw Seifer...I might have to fight him." He already began trying to open up.

And I always hinted a sense of jealousy when Rinoa asked for Seifer in the train. The sentence above even gave me that feeling.

Maybe you still hate him for that outburst, but I think its fair to say, when realization hits you like a brick wall, just like running into a brick wall, you might have to shout, OW!

I'm actually really enjoying this now. Taking about this makes me realize more things. If you think what I'm saying is stupid, please reply.

I shall not argue that Squall is not well-written. Which is to say that he is written comprehensively, logically and with personality.

As such, I have no problem believing a human being like Squall. Who due to his own insecurity pushes people away. Who wears his cold facade much too involved that he is reduced to a mere caricature. Who goes on not realizing that he does more harm than good. Who has been at it for far too long, and not really subtle at it, too.

However, those are not the problem. The problem is that is not the kind of a person I could bring myself to like. I must applaud his friends for sticking up with the jerk-version of Squall for so long before he got better.

While I understand why he shouted because of hitting a wall, I still think it's stupid to run headlong into the wall in the first place.

Of course, it's human nature to do stupid things, so that may be hypocritical of me.

I finally get it. Okay, simply Squall isn't a good protagonist in the sense of loyalty, friendship, selflessness and everything else that comes with being a good protagonist. I still feel though that his memory loss is what makes him a victim of this. That the later Squall we learn is what he would have been from the beginning if he had only known. It is as almost as saying that Squall hasn't really grown as a person since he was 10-15 yrs old. Intellectually he's smart but is childish with how he carries himself. And even more so, we aren't supposed to like before Squall. Before Squall acts more like Legato Bluesummers, in the fact that he's cold and does what he is told, even if it means killing a friend. After Squall acts more like what we usually do from protagonists.

Now here's the thing, I once had an english teacher tell us that a good protagonist has problems, has issues that the story helps him to unfold. It basically makes him a strong character to have these problems and still do what he has to do to defeat the antagonist. And I as well agree. You get too many characters, like Link, who is justified in everything he does, there is nothing he does wrong. However, with Squall, there is that grey matter that we all deal with. Is it right? Is it wrong? Or is it a little bit of both?

I guess in the end, I have to agree, you are not supposed to like Squall at the beginning. And in a sense, I'm trying to say that's not the real Squall, thats more like 10-15 yr old Squall who never really had that developement. We go through developements in our lifetime and there are definetly pin-point moments that you can see it. Everyone else in the game had thier developement except Squall and Seifer. In the end, Squall finds its okay to trust people, Seifer finds that dreams are a great thing to have, so long you're not obsessed over it.

What I get from you though is that, you feel Squall is the way he is at the start on his own accord, that GFs had really no play in it. Am I right in feeling this?

Ah, indeed. Of course a character must have flaws, and it is my opinion that the FF series, in most of its modern interations, manages to convey this well.

Now, I have stated that it is to my distaste that Squall is so... so childish in displaying his emotional problems. Yes, I do fault him for this entirely and did not take account of it being possibility caused by GF-related memory loss. However, I do find the whole GF-thing is too handwavy to my taste.

Imagine Tidus, the boy with father issues, in the same situation. Man, I don't know if I could stand playing a 16-year old crybaby, even if it's justified by the GF thing.

Then we see Cloud, with his supremely low self-esteem. He actually lost five years of his life, and we don't see the real him until nearing the end of the game. However, the game gave hints of him being messed up in the head early on.

With Squall, I'm stuck with an unlikable main without explanation for half of the game. And when it's explained, it is due to something that is not really plot-related. I think it is fair for people to find this quite distasteful, and that when he got better, it was too little, too late.

And yes. I think that's the point. We are not supposed to like the early Squall. Remember that my whole tirade is against Squall as a person, not as a character. Adn even then, he is pretty cool in the end. I just wish they gave hints that he would get better at the beginning.

>> No.5682
File: 1247346551491.jpg -(53275 B, 320x224) Thumbnail displayed, click image for full size.

>>5681 Well, it actually tells you about GF memory-loss very very early in the game, on the Study Panel. And it plays just as much role as mako showering. GFs do what mako did for Cloud, except you have to keep the GFs.

The difference is that Cloud took Zack's memory where as Squall lost memory. Cloud lost his military career memory, Squall lost his childhood memory. This means Cloud remembers how he was as a child and can grow from that. Squall can only grow from the military and on, which means feelings have no place in war. Mind you though, I'm not saying Cloud was better off, he has to now peice his self from what he now knows.

Now, I really don't know whats the difference between hating Squall as a person in comparison as a character. Are you saying that he's a well written character that you simply don't enjoy? Then that I simply have to understand. Not everyone is going to like any single person, there will be hate.

As for immaturity through "whatevers", "..." and the one outburst, I simply don't see it. I don't think its immature. He's a loner alright, but there are two types of loners:
The one that simply doesn't have friends and is willing to have company

The one that simply doesn't want friends or company

However, they keep coming up to Squall, they keep bothering him, they are in a sense being rude by intruding into his space. He doesn't scream at them, he doesn't get mad, he simply ignores. As for the outburst, its seriously one moment in the game, are you really disliking him for one moment in the game?

Well, either way, this was completely wasted on you. As you stated, you really don't hate Squall, you hate his earlier self, this is more for those people who call him a whiney emo faggot.
