FF8 sucked ass, that battle system was retarded, it was like this:

Have you been living under a rock all this time? ALMOST ALL the summons in pre-FFX have a 9999 max damage cap. FFVIII's summon system was crappy because you had to wait before your summon comes out and, during that time, it can be killed. Boost also sucks ass.

you obviously didn't level your GF or learned his abilities. Strongest GF in 8 was Eden, who could do 99999 damage when boosted to 255 (wich was very easy because of his long and awesome summon time)

8 was very good, I liked how monsters leveled as you did (heck I leveled to like 75 first before going on the Timber mission, by that time I had everyone's second best weapon because I got the materials from playing cards, haha, also got almost all magics by that point too).

Story was good and intriguing (fighting what your girlfriend will be half a dozen generations into the future? now that's something, also having your dad being some funny wierdo that's head of a country, lol).

I liked the battle system because it encouraged melee and used magic as support. 100 Drains to St-atk and you didnt need cure anymore exept on bosses, but for that you had the Recover ability so go figure. Gil and items were things you basically didnt need lol, I spent maybe 10? 20000 gil in an entire game, and never used a potion or whatever.

FFVIII's card system was very good too, much better than the epic fail cards from FFIX.

First off, a 1st grader could come up with a more compelling reason why the team didn't know each other. LOL TEH GAURDIAN FORCES IZ MAKIN UZ STOOPID. So they keep using them. As to the gameplay. Ouch. You couldn't use magic without making your stats go down, you couldn't raise your stats without junctioning a useless GF to you. Using anything made you weaker. The GFs were laughable, and drawing magics made even the easiest fights into long tedius affairs with no end in sight. Plus the monsters got stronger anytime you leveled up. Who thought this was fun? It was nothing but work.

The GF thing is kind of one of the big points in the game... they either a) don't use them and be weak little wimps or b) use them and deal with the consequences, obciously they need to choose b.

I thaught the idea of having a building suddenly fly was pretty awesome. Was well played out in the "Garden Wars" part of the game too.

The battle system was made so drawing was indeed lots of work, but you only had to do that work ONCE, once you had your stock of magic, you were set for the rest of the game pretty much. You often didnt have to use your magics because bosses tended to have useful drawable magics. Heck most of the time I never even had my Magic command equipped.

I like to be able to USE my magics, and most of the time you couldn't unless you wanted to spend the next half an hour trying to redraw the magics from yet more enemies. I don't like being forced to play the game the way the designers decided I should.

Now the GF story line was stupid. I could think of half a dozen better reasons why Sqaul didn't know the rest, starting with the most obvious one -- they simply hadn't met yet. To make a big deal about the GFs causing memory loss and them not giving a second thought to using them made the whole discovery seem like a waste of time.

The Rinoa = Ultamecia thing was made up by fans, there's very little in game evidence of this. And the reason that fans made up the connection is that they wanted the story to be more than it was. It was about killing Ultamecia before she compressed time. I didn't see a lot of depth in the story.

Laguna being Squall's dad wasnt in the storyline either, but just like Ultimecia, there were enough hints for those who wanted to connect the dots. There's plenty of clues in the game that point out to it.

The clues were mostly in your head dude. There was nothing connecting Rinoa to Ultimecia. I never saw any of the stuff that fanboys swore was there -- and the strongest evidence relies on alleged mistransations of the Japanese.

1) Ultimecia summons Griever, wich would be possible since she has Squall's ring, and the link between rings and GFs is laid with Doomtrain wich must be summoned first time using the Salomen Ring.

2) Ultimecia has wings, although they are black, the only other person linked to wings is Rinoa.

3) Edea, at that point posessed by Ultimecia, was able to stop the bullet like she knew exactly when it was coming. She knew it was coming from the clocktower and she knew the exact time displayed on the tower when it was fired. There are only 3 persons who know that exact time because they were there: Squall, Irvine and Rinoa.

4) Ultimecia is able to easily play on Seifer's wish to be the sorceres' knight, his "romantic dream". The only person who knows that dream is Rinoa, since she dated him.

5) Her muzings right before you fight her ultimate form, where she refers to her past and the time with the group amongst other things.

And lots more things that show that the events are not random but rather played out exactly like a play in order to get Squall into the future (the whole point of timecompression), in order to have Squall kill her, as she stated herself that if it does have to happen, she wants Squall to do it.

Personally, I found FF8's storyline to be enjoyable. Some parts where great, while other where a bit slow.

The junction system was kind of annoying. My biggest issue would be it took too long to set up your characters every time you switched party members. There was no doubt about it though, you could make some amazing great characters using it.
